Needle therapies
Pestle Needle Therapy
Pestle needle therapy is a traditional Chinese technique that uses blunt, pestle-shaped metal instruments. They press, roll and tap along points and pathways on the skin without piercing it. Dr Patel is one of the first five practitioners in South Africa formally trained in this method.

What it involves
- Pestle instruments of different shapes are applied with pressure, rolling or light rhythmic tapping.
- The skin is not punctured, which can suit people who would rather avoid needles.
- It may be used on its own or alongside acupuncture, depending on your consultation.
Your consultation
- The same full consultation as for acupuncture: your concern, history, medication and lifestyle.
- A discussion of whether a non-penetrating technique suits you, and how it fits into your care plan.
What to expect
- Firm but comfortable pressure, rolling or tapping. Tell Dr Patel at any time if it feels too strong.
- Treatment is usually given seated or lying down, with clothing adjusted as needed.
- Temporary redness on the treated skin is common.
Before you book: precautions
Please let Dr Patel know about the following. They do not always rule treatment out, but they help her keep you safe.
- Mention broken skin, rashes, recent injuries or areas of numbness.
- Tell Dr Patel if you are pregnant or have a bleeding disorder.
This information is general. Your suitability for any treatment is assessed individually at your consultation.
