Hands-on & heat therapies

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a traditional heat therapy. Moxa, made from dried mugwort, is warmed near selected points on the body, typically held above the skin or on the handle of an acupuncture needle, to give a gentle, penetrating warmth.

What it involves

  • Moxa is held a short distance above the skin, or placed on a needle handle, and removed or adjusted before it becomes too warm.
  • It is often used as an addition to an acupuncture session.

Your consultation

  • Moxibustion is considered as part of your overall consultation and is only used where it suits your presentation.

What to expect

  • A spreading warmth. Tell Dr Patel immediately if anything feels hot.
  • Moxa has a distinctive herbal smoke. Let the practice know if you are sensitive to smoke or have asthma.

Before you book: precautions

Please let Dr Patel know about the following. They do not always rule treatment out, but they help her keep you safe.

  • Not used over areas of reduced sensation, broken skin or the face.
  • Mention pregnancy, diabetes affecting sensation, asthma or smoke sensitivity.

This information is general. Your suitability for any treatment is assessed individually at your consultation.
