About treatment
What the therapies involve and what to expect.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very fine. Most people feel a brief prick followed by a dull ache, tingling or warmth, and many find sessions relaxing. Tell Dr Patel at any time if something is uncomfortable.
Are acupuncture needles single-use?
Yes. Acupuncture needles are sterile, single-use and much finer than injection needles.
Can I have treatment if I am pregnant or trying to conceive?
Tell Dr Patel if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, as some acupuncture points are avoided in pregnancy. Each treatment page lists its own precautions.
What can I see Dr Patel about?
People commonly consult Dr Patel about pain, women’s health (including fertility support, PCOS, menstrual health and menopause), digestive concerns, stress, sleep and fatigue. Whether a treatment is suitable for you is discussed during your consultation.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on you, your concern and how long you have had it. Dr Patel will discuss a sensible plan at your first visit and review it with you as you go. No particular result or number of sessions can be guaranteed.
Will cupping leave marks?
Often, yes. Cupping commonly leaves circular marks that are not burns and usually fade within several days.
What is tuina?
Tuina is a Chinese therapeutic massage using pressing, kneading and stretching techniques on muscles and traditional channels. It is often used for tension and musculoskeletal discomfort.
Should I stop my medication?
No. Complementary treatment works alongside your medical care. Do not stop or change prescribed medication without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it.
